Miss Underwater: a Sonnet

Miss Underwater

By CND的皮囊

Dedicated to Miss Underwater, Cecilia Tallis

A piece broke away from the vase, sinking

Into the undetectable darkness.

Miss Underwater, see, it’s there, glowing.

Reach out, grab it back and sort out the mess.

A boy traded his future for freedom,

Waiting at Dunkirk among winds and waves.

Miss Underwater, get the one that roams

To come back. Come back, as he always craves.

A young girl driven by childish impulse,

Jumped into the pond, drowning in regret.

Miss Underwater, though you have no cause,

Forgive her please, before she all forgets.

That bitter summer is fading away,

Yet the bygone souls have nowhere to lay.

Inspired by

Atonement, novel, Ian McEwan
